Sigma 957 was a planet in contested space under titular control of the Narn Regime. (S1E10, Mind War)

Believing the planet bore large deposits of Quantium 40, a mineral used in jumpgate construction, Catherine Sakai set out to survey it (S1E10, Mind War). The planet was then classified as a dead world.

During her survey, Sakai encountered a giant, unidentified spacecraft which nearly drained her ship's power (leaving only voice-computer interface and minimal life support) as it created and departed through a rather unique jumppoint, looking to be composed of numerous arcing charges and with no discernable red/blue shifting.

Unknown at the time, the ship belonged to one of the races of "Firstones" called the Walkers of Sigma 957 -- a species who did not go beyond the rim after the last shadow war.

Quote from G'Kar: "There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They are vast, timeless ... They are a mystery, and I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe-- that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Ms. Sakai, they walk near Sigma-957. They must walk there alone."

At Draal's instigation, Ivanova later approached these Walkers (S3E05, Voices of Authority), the first of several to be recruited into the Shadow War, after having glimpsed them via The Great Machine. (Note the ship and type of jumppoint in both Mind War and Voices of Authority for the tie-in.)
