Excalibur is the legendary sword carried by King Arthur.

Mythology

In the Arthur legend, a young boy was crowned king when he was able to pull an enchanted sword from the stone. With his guardian and advisor, Merlin, by his side, this boy named Arthur embarked on a mission to defeat the rebel kings of Logres (Britain) and unite all Britons. When his sword was broken in battle against King Pellinor, Merlin took King Arthur to a lake where he met the mysterious Lady of the Lake. This strange woman gave to Arthur the sword called Excalibur, but warned him that the sword was not truly his. The sword gave Arthur unmatched strength in battle, and the scabbard kept any weapon from killing him. With the renewed strengh offered by Excalibur, Arthur gathered together the Knights of the Round Table, men of boundless courage and valor in the dark times they lived in. After many years, Arthur was drawn into a bloody conflict with his own son, Mordred, at the fields of Camlann. By dropping the sword's scabbard, Arthur gave Mordred the ability to deal him a fatal wound. As the king lay dying, he ordered Sir Bedivere, one of his most trusted knights, to take the sword and give it back to the Lady of the Lake. At first, Bedivere refused, but Arthur implored him, knowing that he could not rest so long as he kept the Lady's blade. When Sir Bedivere had finally thrown the sword back into the lake, the Lady of the Lake and the maidens carried Arthur away to the magical island of Avalon, where he could rest and be healed of his wounds.

The legend ends there, and the fate of Excalibur is unknown. However, some say that when the world has need of it, the sword Excalibur will return, and the strength of the Knights of the Round Table will rise again.
