Default The Babylon Project Base 3.2 and Raider Wars 2.0 released!

The Babylon Project Base 3.2 and Raider Wars 2.0 released!

What is the Babylon Project?

The Babylon Project is a group of dedicated individuals who are trying to bring the essence of Babylon 5 space combat to Freespace 2 engine, an award winning space combat simulation from Volition Incorporated. The project was started way back in 1999 and has seen three full releases since then, constantly building up in content and quality.

The Babylon Project uses an improved FreeSpace 2 engine by The Source Code Project. Thanks to the hard work of the coders, we have been able to bring the graphical quality far past that of the original Freespace 2, and close to the modern day standards. The use of modified source code has also allowed us to make the Babylon Project a full stand-alone game; it no longer requires the original Freespace 2. That's right, this is a 100% free of charge game made for the enjoyment of all scifi fans.

What sort of a gameplay does the Babylon Project have?

The Babylon Project is based on Freespace 2, so fast paced action is the keyword here. The controls are easy to learn and intuitive. The best game experience can be archieved with a joystick but you can also play with a mouse and a keyboard. Mission types vary from simple shoot-and-kill to much more complex escort, assault and recon missions with multiple objectives.

What are the system requirements?

Pentium 3 600 MHz or equivalent
256 MB RAM
Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
DirectX 8.1 compatible 3D hardware accelerator card with "Hardware Transformation and Lightning" (HT&L) support
DirectX 8.1 compatible 16-bit sound card
750 MB hard drive space
DirectX 8.1 or newer installed

So how do I get to play?

First, you need the Base download. This includes all the necessary files you need to play the game, but no missions or campaigns. All playable content is dowloaded separately and we currently have two campaigns available for your enjoyment:

Raider Wars 2.0

Our current major campaign with 16 playable missions and full voice acting. The year is 2258 and the name of the place is Altair. The Raiders, an organized faction of pirates and smugglers have lately established a strong presence in the Altair system. The Earth Force has decided to launch an offensive and to stop Raider activity once and for all.

Earth-Minbari War 2.0

An old five-mission demo campaign with full voice acting. It lacks some of the more advanced stuff we have in Raider Wars, but if you want to get into a serious dogfight against deadly Nial-fighters and defend Earth against an alien invasion, the campaing is still a lot of fun.

Find out more of our game from our website at http://www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp/ho...on/index.shtml

Missions? Well play Raider Wars, Earth-Minbari War and Mission Pack.
Instructions on how to make missions? There are two sets of basic guides included with the base. If you want to know more, see this thread.

Alien Ebay Fraudster

Hi, if anyone who helped design the game is reading this, someone is selling the game YOU designed on ebay.co.uk. The ID of this scumbag is Deepalpha1.

I hate to see someone profiteering from other people's hard endeavours so if you can do anything about this do it before someone else falls for it!!

Wow --- Wow --- Wow... Thank-you so much to all the people who put so much effort into this.

I just finished the Raider Wars group of missions and man was that a lot of fun.

I'll be playing it again and again.

You know what would make your project even better? Zip files.

I hate having to use wine to install it because you distribute it as an exe file, BAD BAD BAD!

Since the majority of TBP players use Windows, the files are distributed in exes. It would be far too much trouble and bandwidth consuming to have both versions. In any case, TBP does not even have linux executable included by default.

Sorry, the minority just gotta bear with installation.

Fair enough, you wouldn't object to someone making and hosting a linux version of it though would you?

The whole fs2_open project seems to be very linux unfriendly on the whole though, I couldn't find a recent source tarball (the ones I could find wouldn't compile) so I had to check it out from the CVS, how accessible is that to most people?

Apart from that, the games awesome. It looks, and plays, brilliantly, nice work!

There's a Linux Development forum, but it's not that active and development is slow because not all SCP devs use linux.

To tell you the truth, I've been considering linux support, but it's not quite on-par with Windows executables stability wise and most likely even got quite a lot of more problems. It would be a pain to support, especially when only like 2% in the HLP community (if even that many) use linux. Granted, most linux users know a whole lotta more about computers than your regular Windoze user does.

While we are waiting for FS2_Open 3.6.7 final and TBP Base 3.3, let me see if it would be possible in a convenient way to have a zip file with linux executable. If it is still a big no-no at the time, then you can go and host it on your own.

I saw your post on TBP, I actually think it would be better to just distrubte the data in an archive, and link seperatly to either pre-compiled binaries or the source code. Something like autopackage (http://www.autopackage.org/) would allow you to have a self contained install file that works, and would drag fs2_open in as a dependency separately, although I have no idea if autopackage supports building deps from souce.

I, for one, have yet to find a pre-compiled fs2_open binary that actually runs on my machine. Plus it would make submitting it to portage easier

I've yet to experience any problems stability-wise, or feature wise. All the extra options I've wanted to use work. The only problem I did have was during the compile stage, but that was quickly fixed and I suppose that wouldn't be an issue with a proper source release, rather than a cvs checkout.

I remember the same exact thing happening to the IFH project. Very sad indeed. However, in that case, the item was removed pretty quickly if I remember correctly, so hopefully eBay care more than you say they do.
