Genetic Monarchy N'chak'fah is a planet with a thick atmosphere that had kept the Gaim from developing astronomy or space flight. Faced with an outside threat, the Queens broke off all but minimal cold warfare among themselves and decided to gather information about the potential threats from alien governments. When the consensus was reached that contact with other races was necessary, the Gaim Queens decided to create a new class of Gaim for this mission. For the first time in their planet's history, the Gaim Queens collectively combined their genetic samples to produce an ambassador class Gaim, to represent the entire species and all of the Queens. When it was noticed that so many of the alien races were bipedal, they designed their ambassadors to be likewise. Physically, the ambassadors Gaim are not representative of the Gaim as a whole. Originally, the Gaim only produced enough ambassadors to fulfill diplomatic functions. As the concept of "commerce" took hold, many more ambassadors were produced to act as negotiators and interact with businessmen from other races.
As with non-sentient hive insects, the core of Gaim society is the Queen. Loyalty to the Queen is guaranteed thorough a combination of instinct and the interplay of various pheromones. Both rebellion and disobedience are impossible unless induced chemically. Non-sentient Gaim can be induced to change their allegiance from one Queen to another when exposed to certain airborne chemicals. Pheromone war is a standard component of Gaim vs. Gaim tactics and still used in the remaining rivalries between the Queens. Gaim society is task oriented. Each Gaim is genetically designed for a specific task. Even the Queens are engineered for their role. Gaim society ranges from intelligent, autonomous advisors to the Queen to non-intelligent worker drone. The concept of "advancement" has no meaning in Gaim society since the function of Gaim workers and drones does not change. Non-sentient Gaim simply perform their function(s) instinctively. Sentient Gaim are disciplined through a pheromone reward/punishment system.
The Gaim are leaders in the biological sciences. Not only can the Queens manipulate Gaim genetic material, they can produce drones that can manipulate alien genetic material. The top imports from N'chak'fah are biological computers, drugs, and bio-weaponry. The Gaim hardware industry lags behind quite a bit.
Gaim ground forces, the warrior drones, are some of the fiercest, toughest soldiers among the known races. Like all Gaim, they are genetically engineered for specific military tasks and can be produced en masse when needed. The Gaim Queens have taken to hiring mercenary advisors to cope with advanced combat technology. Due to the relatively new discovery of other races, the Gaim have no spaceship design that is uniquely their own. Their fleet consists entirely of ships bought from anyone who would sell. By the late 2250's the Gaim had assembled enough ships to have a respectable fleet. The backbone of the Gaim fleet is several Narn old heavy cruisers that they captured while driving the Narn off N'chak'fah. They bought more though third parties, along with armed freighters and Pak'Ma'Ra gunboats. When possible, the Gaim have updated the weaponry on their ships with equipment bought from the Centauri. The Gaim have bought or scavenged ships from about every race. They have begun assembling the equipment necessary for building orbital shipyards |
