Autocracy
There are several. The most popular is Marga Tain, a religion that worships the Margus as a divine figure, the spokesman of the gods. The Grome are basically pantheistic, believing in a number of gods. Officially the government claims tolerance for all faiths. However, there have been numerous inquisitions and purges carried out over the years by the Marga Tain and it is expected these will continue. As a god-king, the Margus finds the inquisitions an easy form of political control where religious heresy, real or perceived, carries with it the taint of treason.
Grome civilization has existed for about 2,000 years. It is a very stagnant. Change is infrequent and generally violent. The Grome are effectively divided into government members and everyone else. Anyone connected with the government generally prospers, the rest of the people survive as best they can. Taxes are very high and there are taxes on just about everything. Crime is a problem on Gromahk and there is a large criminal class despite the draconian laws of the Margus. Crime takes many different forms on Gromahk; running the gamut from religious belief that denies the supremacy of the Margus to smuggling or tax-avoidance. Popular uprisings are common on Gromahk. In some cases it is the only way to bring an injustice to the attention of the Margus. Regardless of the intent, all uprisings are brutally crushed, usually ending in widely publicized mass executions as warnings to other potential rebels. The Grome tend to be proud to the point of arrogance and often rub other races the wrong way. They prize material wealth, status, and competition.
The level of Grome technology is low. They have had interstellar flight for only about 70 years. Most of their technological progress benefits and/or is restricted to government use. The top heavy nature of their government has held the Grome back in about every way possible. They are adept at communications, transport, mining and food synthesis.
The Grome fleet is made up of a few weak warships. They are generally considered the weakest race in the Alliance. |
