The Brakiri Homeworld is sometimes referred to as "Brakos". As with Earth, the Centauri made first contact with the Brakiri. The Centauri ship captain mispronounced the planet's name in his initial report. The Centauri have never bothered to correct the mistake. It is acceptable to use either name although using "Brakir" implies the speaker has some actual knowledge of the subject.

Brakiri religion is a part of Brakiri family life. Little is known about it. The few things that are known center around the fact that the Brakiri solar system has only one known comet. The Brakiri have assigned spiritual significance to this astronomical oddity. The comet is a symbol of death, sometimes transformation, to most Brakiri. The comet has a 200-year orbit around Brakir's sun. The night when the comet is at its closest approach to Brakir is celebrated as "The Day of the Dead", when the dead return to life. The last "Day of the Dead" was in 2262. It was the first since the Brakiri achieved jumpgate technology. Many Brakiri living on colony worlds made pilgrimages to Brakir for the Day. Those who could not return home temporarily "purchased" the areas around where they lived, making them ceremonial parts of Brakir. Many strange incidents occurred in these areas to Brakiri and non-Brakiri alike.
Brakiri civilization has been around for about 6,000 years and the major direction of this civilization comes from its form of government. When the Krona took power over Brakir they engineered a system designed to maximize corporate profit and make the planet a business center for the whole galaxy. The system worked, but the primary ones to benefit from it were the Krona and those at the higher echelons of the business world. Success has widened the gulf between this upper class and the rest of Brakir. Advancement is often slow and fraught with political maneuvering. Some Brakiri turned to crime for advancement denied in the business world. Brakiri criminal groups are called Chadis, or brotherhoods. A member of a Chadi stands out because of facial tattooing; the complexity and symbology indicating rank and status. Crime lords rule in the margins where is no Corporate Interest to move the Krona to act against them. Many Brakiri leave Brakir for these reasons, usually traveling to Kara or somewhere in the Earth Alliance. With skilled workers leaving Brakir, the Krona has begun to realize their mistake. Otherwise, Brakiri social structure is very similar to that of Earth about 300 years ago and the similarities are more than coincidental. When the Brakiri first began to explore the possibility of life on other worlds, they managed to catch television and radio signals from Earth. The images they received became a subject of fascination for the Brakiri and whole styles grew up around them. Later when the Brakiri went into space they sought contact with Earth, considering humans cousins to their race. The main goal of a Brakiri, male or female, is excellence in business, whatever business it is. The drive for success colors every facet of life on Brakir. The only thing that matters as much as success to the average Brakiri is how that success is achieved. The Brakiri are proud of their ability to "play by the rules" and win. Their problems with organized crime stem, in part, from an unwillingness to admit there is a problem. The only refuge from the drive to succeed is offered by Brakiri family life, which is very private. Culturally, Brakir was a heavily male-dominated society but when the Krona assumed power, women were given more opportunity to rise to prominent positions. Brakiri prize success, money, happiness and comfort. They tend to be soft-spoken, which often hides the intensity with which they attack their work. They get along quite well with humanoid species, less so with other species.
The Brakiri have had interstellar flight for about 150 years. Their penchant for deal-making and business has put their technology on a par with most Alliance worlds. They are adept at communications, transport, security and audio-visual technology.
The Brakiri maintain a respectable fleet for the purpose of protecting their commercial interests. While their ships are inferior to ours, they can hold their own against similar ships among the Non-Aligned Worlds. Their ground troops are formidable, but much fewer in numbers than our ground troops. The Brakiri see war as a business move and as yet have not played that particular card. Many Brakiri quote the philosopher Klows, who wrote "War is business policy pursued by other means."
The Brakiri have a large agricultural colony on Kara, the second planet in their solar system. They also have a mining colony on D'Grn 4, only recently established. |
