Small Site Problem

We've removed the Live Chat thing temporarily. There was a problem with the java code it used and IE4, where it would cause the background, link, and other colors to revert to the browser defaults. Hopefully we can find a solution soon.
Chat Log Ready!

The log of todays IRC chat with the developers is now available. Download it here. It was an interesting chat, from what I was there to see. Use Notepad to view it
The Official Site Now At FirstOnes.com !

As promised, and after 3 days of work, we are happy to have for the fans of the game the official Sierra website, as seen before they took it down earlier this week. The complete site, over 370MBs of files, is located fully at www.firstones.com/b5games.

I would like to thank Drazi Guy for his help in this task, without him this would never happen. Enjoy!!

Small Note: As it is my wife's birthday tonight, I am taking her out for dinner. I will be late to the chat, but when I get back home I will make sure to pop by and say hello. Sorry about that, but my wife comes first:)

  Articles on Beyond Babylon

The second issue of Beyond Babylon, the E-Zine of the Babylon 5 Modelers Guild has a couple of articles on the demise of the game. It's an honor to have been quoted (Grinner) there. :)
New Team Member

Hi. I go by the name of Drazi Guy, and I'm here to help out Lorien and Grinner. I will be doing updates, etc, generally helping maintain the site and boards. I have actually been around here for a little while, but only recently have had very much to do. Hope you enjoy my presence.

Gamecenter Article about Dan Foy, Lead Programmer

This week's Gamecenter Game Spin column deals with Dan Foy, and his opinions about the restructure, along with some of his opinions. A great read...most saddening as well.

AVault Reports New Publisher for Game Possible

Adrenaline Vault has a short article on the fact that another publisher for Babylon 5 is a strong possibility.

"Sierra has indicated a willingness to sell the project materials. . I believe Sierra will not be renewing their exclusive license with Warner. It is set to expire soon, so it will be available. And our development team is interested in completing the project. What the details are about bringing these pieces together is something still being discussed by the team..
Open Letters from Jeff Reitman and John Walker

ferretgamer.com's Mail Section has a pair of emails from Jeff Reitman and John Walker. As usual, a good read.

John Walker's email is also replicated in his .plan files sans typos.

Press Support

Since this morning, we've had several more articles pop up regarding the demise of the game and 105 Sierra employees.

ferretgamer.com's ferrettalk
Gamespot's Babylon 5: Reader Response
PlanetShogo's Off-Topic Blurb
Tech-Base's Saving a Quality Game Blurb

The largest gaming magazine in Finland, Pelit, has a couple of online articles in their current issue. One of the articles and be directly found here, and a translated snippet is available below.

"After Sierra dropped several games from development there have been talking about the future of these games, especially the fate of Babylon 5: Into the Fire. Many disappointed fans around the world are so furious that they have placed Sierra`s games under a boycott and have sworn never to buy another game from Sierra."

Thanks to Vesa Juusola for the translation.
More Press Feedback: PlanetBlood, Wired News and FGN Online

Yup, it is still coming in. PlanetBlood, a website dedicated to Monolith's Blood series posted a nice supportive news item about the game's cancellation:

"Now, while this has nothing to do with the Blood series of games, I know of almost no other community that understands what it is to be a gamer and speak out with a passion against things we know are wrong, than the Bloodites. Sierra has done something that's outraged gamers everywhere so I ask- should you be someone who feels the need to support the B5 combat sim and its community, to visit the Firstones website and lend a hand to support the community where support is needed. "

Check it all right over here. Thanks PlanetBlood. I for one enjoyed Blood 2:)

Next on the ever growing list of articles, is the one on Wired News titled "Sierra Shuffle Rocks Gamers".This is a two page article, but here is the part I liked best (curse you rock!):

The Babylon 5 community, which is even more dedicated and fanatical than Trekkies, was equally upset at the news. Messages on Usenet and www.firstones.com -- a fan site for the game -- ranged from dismay to wondering how to save the game.

One creative poster put a curse on Sierra executives, with lines like "May G'Kar seduce your wifes [sic] and run away with them and your children, and may Ivanova seduce your husbands and run away with them and your children."

Third one for today was published on FGN Online, one of the major industry gaming news publications. The article titled "Sierra Reaction Pours Forth" again provides a good roundup of the latest news. We are a noisy crowd!:)

There's been a storm of protest to Sierra's cancellation of upcoming products such as Babylon 5. We've rounded up the latest opinion from the Web.

I am sure more will follow later. Keep emailing me the links to the articles. Thanks guys, and keep the action going. We are all showing the industry what fans can do if they want to play a game !

More Press Feedback @ PC Gamer Online

I hope some of this makes it to the print version, that would really show some fantastic support. In any case, titled "Sierra Reform Provokes Reaction" is another supportive article, which resulted in choosing this topic for their letterbox (read news below this item):

The job cuts and canning of certain titles has caused concern amongst gamers and the industry alike. Discarded games include Babylon 5 and Middle-earth both of which have provoked outraged online response. Other titles such as Pro Pilot Paradise have sank with barely a whisper of mourning. Of more importance is the loss of over a hundred jobs which has fuelled the vitriol which the industry has poured on Sierra.

Some of the harshest comment came from IGNPC. In response to Sierra's claim that the trashed titles did not meet its success criteria the site writes: "We're not sure what their criteria is, but if strapping yourself to a longhorn falls within it, and a 3D space combat game based on one of the biggest television licenses available does not, we have serious doubts about whether or not it will stand the test of time."

Babylon 5's lead programmer Dan Foy has also posted a message. On the title's fansite at www.firstones.com, he writes; "Well, I must say that this has been one long, difficult day for all of us. I wish I knew how to express how much of a help this outpouring of support has been to me. I can hardly imagine how hard this would have been without it. Thank you, everyone. Dan."

Thanks PC Gamer!!

Cancellations at Sierra, An Open Letter Topic @ PC Gamer!

Ok this is SUPER important. EVERYONE, even those who have already emailed the press, should send letters to PC Gamer On-line regarding this new letter topic they have going on right now:

Yesterday was a dark day for 105 Sierra employees who found out their games (and jobs) were getting the axe. What are your feelings on Sierra's "restructuring"? How excited were you about the canceled games? Send your thoughts to the Letters Mailbox and check back tomorrow to read a selection of responses.

Use: letters@pcgamer.com, and the subject: "Cancellations at Sierra". Getting our story heard there is VERY important, so lets grab the opportunity!

More Press Feedback from GameSpot & Next-Generation Online

Second one from GameSpot, thanks to the main man Amer Ajami, who has not forgotten his hardcore roots:)

Titled "Babylon 5: Reader Response", is once again regarding the impressive amount of letters GameSpot received in the last day or so (you guys kick ass!):

Since we first posted news about this story, we've been literally flooded by hundreds of e-mails from concerned gamers. The nature of their letters varies from utter disbelief to outright anger.

"The cancellation of this project is a sad day for all the thousands of fans who have been eagerly anticipating the release of this game", says Dirk Loedding. "Count me as a gamer who is very unhappy with Sierra".

Check it out over here. Amer you da man!

Next-Generation Online has also published a good one, titled "Sierra's Restructuring Repercussions":

Internet game news and fan sites have become a hive of activity in the wake of Sierra On-Line's restructuring and game cancellation announcement.

Check it out over here. Great stuff!

More Press Feedback from CNET's GameCenter

CNET's GameCenter has also published a very supportive article about the whole issue titled "Fans Outraged Over Babylon 5 Cancellation":

Apparently, the fans of the show and the game are not only loyal, but vocal as well. As soon as news of the cancellation started making its way around the Internet, message boards (Sierra's Message Boards, FirstOnes.com Message Boards, and CNET Message Boards) and newsgroups began heating up with angry and disappointed fans expressing their outrage over Sierra's action."

Check it out over here. Great stuff. Much thanks to GameCenter's Bill McClendon for his kind support.

An Open Letter From Marc Hudgins

Marc Hudgins, the game. s lead designer, has posted an open letter on the forum. Make sure you check this out, it really explains a lot about the game, the company, the team and more.

Live Place Added; Chat Live Here @ FirstOnes.com

I hope you all like it, it has many cool features (such as surfing with friends and more). Just click here to join the chat as a guest or a registered user. You do not need to download a thing to use this. Enjoy!

More Press Support At The Adrenaline Vault

"Massive E-Mail Campaign Aims to Save Babylon 5" is the headline of a very supportive article over at Avault:

After the announcement yesterday about Sierra. s reorganization and the cancellation of the much-anticipated space combat simulation Babylon 5, the Adrenaline Vault was walloped with a flood of emotional e-mails from fans of the upcoming offering. The goal of the campaign, which was originated at FirstOnes.com, a popular Babylon 5 fan site, is to gather support behind the game and somehow return it to production.

Check out the whole article over here. Huge thanks go to David Laprad, Editor in Chief at The Adrenaline Vault for his support.

Keep it up guys .. looks like this might just work.

Poll to save the game @ AGN3D

Ok, I know exactly how many people visit this site and the forums, and I expect EVERYONE to go now to www.agn3d.com and vote for the game. The poll is on the bottom of the main page. GO GO GO !

More Press Feedback; Blue's News & Gamespot

Well James Ell was right (thanks dude), and Blue's News just might help us all. Here it is straight from Blue's News:

FirstOnes.com seems like a focal point in effort to save the Babylon 5 game (story), they have included my email address on the list of those to write with their unhappy reactions to the news that the space simulator has been cancelled, I'm not sure what I'll be able to do with all the feedback, but I guess I'll try and figure something out.

Just by posting that on his site, he has helped so much. I am sure I speak here for everyone on this one - Thanks Blue!

Gamespot, which are also listed on our "press list" to contact, has posted the following:

After posting our story regarding Sierra On-line's cancellation of Babylon 5, we've received numerous e-mails regarding the game's demise or possible future avenues of development. So we contacted the company to find out what happened.

As of right now, the team has been disbanded. Sierra took a long look at the title, what it had invested into the game itself, and determined that it wouldn't make enough return on the investment Sierra had allotted when the title released. The title still had at least a year left in its development cycle.

Future possibilities? Sierra still holds the license for Warner Brothers' Babylon 5. Prospective developers interested in Babylon 5 would have to contact WB for license negotiations and Sierra if they wanted to make do of the team's work.

I will keep you updated as more comes in. Email me links to related articles, and I will post them here. No, don't email me the interview on Avault (jeez I was flooded with that one), as I don't plan to give Sierra a stage on this site until I am convinced that they respect us (the fans, the game and more to the point - the team) as we respected them for so long.

Plans for today

Well, after a super active day on the forums, here is a list of tasks and ideas we have to either do today or figure out action for:

  1. Press list email - Due to readers feedback, I will set up a "mailing list", where all the press contacts will be included, and instead of having to include loads of emails when you write to them all, you will only have to include "letters@firstones.com". I should have this set up later today, and I might ask one of you to help me.

  2. Contact List - Again, due to fan feedback, we will set up a link on top of this page, which will take you to the primary contact list we have all been trying to create. In case you have no idea what I am talking about, well in order to see exactly what the actual fanbase is, we are creating a contact list. This contact list will be viewable to everyone, and will be used as the primary fan contact list. I am working on this one as well.

  3. "The Letter" - I think I will have to create some poll system here, as I can't seem to get conclusive answers from you all:) Anyway, we need to come to a conclusion on the following ideas: One letter from all of us? How do we get it signed? Do we send it to all press and publishers? Who writes it? Who edits it?

There is a UK site, the Nomad Jedi, which we are going to work with regarding the letter. The more fan sites and such that work together, the better.

  4. Boycott - Do you really all want this? I will start a poll about this issue.

We need answers to all of these. I think I will use the forum, but I will need your help on this. Don't forget: I am not doing this alone here!:) DO NOT email me answering this. Use the forums. I was flooded with over 200 related emails over the night, add that to the normal 200+ I get anyway .. I just can't handle this kind of thing alone.

Update: I need a poll system set up here. Anyone who can do that, email me asap. Use "Poll Help" in the subject line.

Personal Note

Guys, I am a very busy person as you all probably know, and can not keep up with this kind of involvement. I have been a fan of the game from the start, but not an active forum member. Though I feel that I should help as much as I can right now, there is a limit. My work yesterday and today was on hold as a result, and I can't keep that up. You don't want them to fire me do you?:)

So expect me to update later tonight (unless something major comes along), and keep all feedback to the forum. It will save me from going through so many emails. I suggest you all go ahead and come up with some actions, talk about it in the forums, but by all means: don't wait for me or anything .. Love you all, and keep it up!

  Press Feedback

Been getting flooded with loads of support letters, which I have forwarded all to the team - where it is needed. The following are a few related articles posted tonight on various online publications:

3DNexus
FerretGamer.com
Wewp! Entertainment

Email Addresses

Ok here is the list of emails, as suggested by Oak Norton, one of our dedicated readers . If anyone has any other emails handy, drop me a line and I will add them to the list. DO NOT FLOOD these email addresses with "I hate Sierra" emails. The press contacts listed below had nothing to do with Havas' move, and when you write to them, show respect, keep it to the point, and make sure you proof read it before you hit "send", that is if you want them to take you seriously (spelling and grammar errors are as lame as you can get when you want to be heard). They are all VERY busy people. Ok guys?

david@avault.com, brian@avault.com, letters@pcgamer.com, ron@gamespot.com, amer@gamespot.com gamespot_uk@zd.com, letters.pcgp@gameproworld.com, webeditor@cdmag.com, editor@cdmag.com, mike@pcxl.com, rob@pcxl.com, pc_mail@ign.com, newsfeedback@wired.com, tips@wired.com, editors@next-generation.com

Update 8:02PM: Here are more emails sent by James Ell & Sean Polzer:

blue@bluesnews.com, wicked@voodooextreme.com, octane@voodooextreme.com, firehawk@voodooextreme.com, tony@voodooextreme.com, news@warzone.com, eidolon@voodooextreme.com, smiles@shugashack.com, majesty@shugashack.com, huntsman@shugashack.com, steve@agn3d.com, jeremy@agn3d.com, redwood@stomped.com, news@sharkyextreme.com, chrometgr@telefragged.com, editor@maximumpc.com, inside_sources@maximumpc.com, watchdog@maximumpc.com, thresh@firingsquad.com, bob@firingsquad.com.

If any of you feel you write a good letter, send it over, and I will post it here as an example/template.

It's all over

Yup, all gone .. everything. 105 people lost their jobs today, and the game is just history .. we won't ever get to play it.

We have launched message forums here at FirstOnes.com in case Sierra take down the official one (hey, after this, you never know..). Check them over at forums.firstones.com

I don't plan to post the official press release here. Check GA-source if you have to read that. This came in too just a while ago:

As you all know by now, B5: ITF has been cancelled by Havas. The reasons behhind the closure are varied but stem from a lack of support for the product internally and poor management decisions in the past. Havas will inevitably try to put some spin on the whole issue, but rest assured that it will not be the whole truth on the issue.

We need your help. We need you, the fans of B5: ITF, to email every online magazine and tell them how much you were anticipating this game and how ridiculous it was for Havas to cancel the project. Email Avault, PC Gamer, Gamespot, GA, CGW, PC Accelerator, Computer Games Strategy Plus, etc.

The goal is to make the magazines take notice of what happened and to force them to take notice. The more well thought out letters that are recieved by the magazines, the harder it will be for them to ignore the issue.

On a side note, emailing Havas/Sierra would be next to useless as, like the Oakhurst situation, they have made up their minds. Please focus your energy on the matter above instead.

I am more or less speechless, and very very sad. So I will sign off for now. Expect more about this later, and help the dev. team - they need your support now more than ever!!
