  GDC Report

Jeff Reitman has posted a quick report of B5's presentation at the GDC, mainly focusing on his impressions on the presented 3D accelerators:

  • Just got back from GDC with John. I think everyone had a good time and learned a lot. Some of the stuff we got out of the sessions knowledge wise may end up being put to use in the game. We will see.

We also got to check out the latest hardware from 3dfx, NVidia, and others. The Voodoo3 looks a lot better than the Voodoo 2 but is still going to fall short with it's 16 bit color. The realtime volumetric shadows in games like Q3A will not be able to be done on a Voodoo 3 due to the fact that it does not have a stencil buffer. The TNT2, Permedia 3, and the ATI cards a looked pretty good. We had a chance to get talk to most of the companies and should be getting boards to test on so we will keep you posted.

As far as our demo was concerned, we got a lot of positive feedback. We were demoing the game at Intel, 3dfx, NVidia and sometimes Creative Labs. On Wednesday we had multiplayer setup at Intel and the remaining days we had the looping intereactive playback stuff going.

Anyways, I thought I would just clue you guys in on what was going on. I could probably write a whole novel on everything we did at GDC, but I am tired of typing :)

    --Jeff.

  B5 Images

Marc Hudgings has set up a galery of images he created using the Netter Digital models over the course of his work on the game. Here's what he said on the forum:

  • Over the course of working on the game, I've had access to the Netter models. I've made numerous images with them both for myself and for promotional purposes. Some you've seen, some you haven't. Anyway, I decided to put up a gallery of some of these on my website. If you're interested, head over to www.marchdesign.com/babylon5.htm.

  A note about the GDC

Jeff Reitman posted this quick note on the forum today:

  • Just got back from Seattle and now I am on my way out the door again to go to CGDC. Just so you guys know, John, Marc, Dan, and I will be at CGDC this week so don't expect to hear much from us. If any of you are going (I highly doubt it, but hey it's worth a mention), the game will be being shown all over the place in various OEM booths and the like.

    Have a good one.

On a side note - Sorry for the erratic updating, but I had to format my whole Hard Disk and restore it and it didn't go smoothly at all.

The Real Deal! ; First Audio Tracks!

Jeff Reitman sent us the following note, including some music tracks which were made especially for the game:
Here are two of the tracks we are using for the Babylon 5 Space Combat Simulator. The music was written by Christopher Franke (the composer that did all the music for the show) and was split up to be used in our dynamic music system.

The music system is designed so that the intensity of the music will reflect the intensity of the battle (or lack thereof) around you. It REALLY adds a lot to the game. I have included
B5MUSIC1. MP3 (563kb) and B5MUSIC2. MP3 (563KB).

Our goal with the music was to make something that people did not want to turn off. We have several hours of music that we will be using in the game and it is quite likely that you may never hear all of it even after completing the game. These two pieces were made specifically for the game and were not heard anywhere on the show. Enjoy!

Here is a ZIP
file (1.1MB) with the two files, which you should use if you are running Netscape. Thanks Jeff!

  Some Encouraging News

Here's a snippet of news from Randy:

  • As of late yesterday MOST of the original team has decided to accept good offers and stay with the game until it's shipped. The game goes forward. As a matter of fact I’m madly writing away today (Saturday) trying to get scripts finished for our live action shoot at Babylonian Productions… before the WB carts the sets and costumes away.

Generally, if you read the developer's posts on the forum you will find they are quite optimistic. B5 is not dead in any way. Just delayed, but it looks like it will definitely pull through.
